Great British Bake Off bets halted by Ladbrokes

Ladbrokes has stopped banking on BBC reveal the Great British Bake Off after a flurry of wagers sparked fears the yohaig code winner's name might have been dripped.

"A run of bets" was positioned for one entrant, numerous at stores in the Ipswich area, the bookmaker said.

It is not known which baker triggered the flurry or whether any contestants have connections with the Suffolk town.

The very first episode of the popular amateur baking contest aired on BBC One Wednesday night.

It is the sixth series of the yohaig code program, which challenges 12 hopefuls to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Weekly the amateur bakers are expected to tackle a baking obstacle, with minimal directions, and present a "signature dish".

'Soggy bottom'

The bookmaker stated a flurry of bets came in for one of the 12 contestants whose odds began at 12/1 and were reduced to 6/1, 3/1 and then evens.

"We provided costs on Monday and, almost before the ink was dry, an unusual variety of punters remained in a rush to back just one contestant," David Williams of Ladbrokes said.

"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the exact same one-way traffic. That sufficed to set our alarm bells sounding and, as a precaution, we suspended our betting.

"Hopefully, we'll go back up with modified odds sooner rather than later on, but we didn't desire to get with our trousers pulled down and a soggy bottom, so we have actually decided to kick back until we are assured that Bake Off hasn't gone off already.

"When you see a run of bets like this promotion code for one candidate at the cost of everybody else that can be an indication to suspend betting for a bit to examine the scenario," he included.

Several of the bets positioned were the maximum the bookie would take for wagers made on the program's outcome, and 90% were positioned on one participant.

The suspension would not impact bets currently placed, the business stated.

The very first participant to be knocked out of the competition on Wednesday night was Stuart Henshall from Surrey.

The 11 remaining entrants are from Berkshire, Lancashire, Cambridgeshire, London, West Yorkshire, Manchester, Essex, Swansea and two from Perthshire.
