The lifetime salary of Nigeria's senior officers has just taken a mighty turn this August of 2025, and I reckon it's worth scratching out a few words on this rather curious development.

You see, dear reader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has just affixed his name to a scheme that would make a king envious. The good Interior Minister made the declaration at what they call a "Ministerial Retreat" in Abuja, glowing with accomplishment.

What's this new arrangement, you ask? Indeed, it's about providing that certain government officials will continue to receive their full salary until the Lord calls them home. But mark my words - this luxurious arrangement ain't for just any Tom, Dick, or Harry.

Not by a long shot! This remarkable privilege is exclusively for those privileged few who retire at the exalted stations of the highest echelons of service in agencies under the Ministry of Interior.

The official reason – and I present this with a straight face – is to ensure these fine folks don't retire into poverty. Fancy such concern! As if a high-ranking official with decades of government service would be found wanting.

This interesting measure comes alongside other reforms including clearing a pile of over 50,000 pending promotions and founding what they're calling a "world-class Fire Academy" to compare with the one in Arizona. Advancement continues, or so they tell us.

Throughout my observations of administrations come up with schemes to benefit their members, but this lifetime salary arrangement takes the cake. A body has to question: Why not extend such liberality to each civil servant? More fittingly, to the common citizens whose money pays these salaries?

The contrast with other government employees remains plain as day. Numerous former officers still bide their time for retirement funds that amount to a pittance.
